Interested in being a 2022-20223Room Parent?
Room Parents play a vital role in the LCS family. They develop a special rapport and support their classroom teacher in many different ways throughout the school year. Compassion, flexibility and communication are essential skills for this position.
Responsibilities for Room Parents include, but are not limited to, the following:
Communication is an extensive part of being a Room Parent. Your child’s teacher will need pertinent information and reminders sent out to the class on both a regular and ad hoc basis each month. It is therefore important to work closely with your teacher to keep an up-to-date list of contact information for all parents in the class, and to give a warm welcome to any new families who may join after the school year is already underway. Room Parents help to connect parents to one other and to their teacher. In doing so, they build a strong parent community, which is paramount to LCS!
Another extremely important part of being a Room Parent is collecting monetary donations from parents for class gifts in the beginning of the school year. You will be responsible for purchasing and presenting these gifts throughout the year (winter, teacher’s birthday and year end).
In addition to collecting monetary donations, a Room Parent will create a classroom wish list (using an online giving site) for classroom supplies needed throughout the year. The wish list is ongoing, and it is the Room Parent’s job to ask their teacher for current needs on a regular basis, and to make sure the teacher is receiving the supplies for which volunteers sign up.
Planning and Recruitment
Last, but certainly not least, party planning is another very important part of being a Room Parent. Classes in grades K through 4 have four parties throughout the year: Halloween, Winter, Valentine’s and End of Year. Room Parents will work with teachers to plan the celebrations (date, time, activities), as well as to recruit parent volunteers via SignUp Genius to contribute party supplies and to come in to help run each party.
5th Grade Room Parents
The 5th Grade Room Parents will also be a part of our “5th Grade Committee,” and will be expected to play a larger role in planning the 5th grade events. The 5th Grade Committee will include: the Room Parent from each of the 5 homerooms, plus one PTO board member. This committee is an integral part of ensuring that our 5th graders have a memorable last year at LCS.
If you want to make an impact on your student’s experience by helping to organize their 5th Grade end of year activities, this is the perfect opportunity for you!
Major responsibilities are as follows:
- Traditional Room Parent responsibilities (see above). Please note that the role of the 5th Grade Room Parent is limited in comparison to lower grades.
- Organize/run bake sales, ice-cream trucks, etc. at sanctioned school events. The earnings from these sales will help to fund celebration activities.
- Event Planning
- 5th Grade Car Wash
- 5th Grade Clap-Out
- 5th Grade Celebration Day
- Other end of year commemorative activities
