Dear Liberty Corner School Families,
Now that our school year is under way, we would like to take the opportunity to introduce ourselves to you as the Bernards Parents for Exceptional Children (PEC) representatives for Liberty Corner School. We are Amanda Yanuklis Kucerka and Beckie Laubscher and we are the parents of 2nd and 5th graders at LCS.
PEC Mission Statement
If you are not already familiar with the PEC, we are a special education advocacy group. Our mission is to provide the support that families, educators, and community organizations need to help individuals with disabilities reach their full potential. We also strive to create an environment of understanding and acceptance for persons with disabilities within the community.
PEC Parent Advisory Committee
The Bernards PEC – PAC serves as a liaison between parents, district administration, and the Board of Education. As representatives for LCS, we are assigned to represent all families with students receiving any type of special education service. Please contact us at any time over the year if you have topics – both positive feedback or concerns – that you would like discussed at our PEC – PAC meetings. Topics should be broad topics for our school, as we will not discuss any individual students.
The PEC – PAC meetings are held three times a year, with Special Education Administrators and BOE members. The remaining dates for 2016-17 school year are January 25th and April 12th. If you have topics you would like to submit for discussion, please contact us at least 2 weeks in advance of these meetings and we will include your topic on the meeting agenda. The minutes from our October 19th meeting can be found here: http://bernardspec.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/PEC-Admin-Minutes-10-19-16.pdf
In addition, the PEC Co-Presidents keep up with district news and policies that may affect students receiving special services by attending monthly meetings with the PTO presidents of all the district schools and the Advocacy Committee of the Board of Education.

A big part of PEC’s efforts involve the creation and implementation of programs. Bernards PEC organizes and subsidizes recreational and educational programs for students, parents and families; organizes and funds a district-wide disability awareness program; and trains and schedules students ages 10 and up for our peer mentor program. In addition, we distribute information about local community programs and workshops through our eBlast. Please let us know if there is something you wish was offered or something you’d like to help organize.
Bernards PEC makes donations to the Board of Education to enhance district programs and services and to help fulfill teacher wish lists. Funding disability awareness workshops, mentor training, program subsidies, holiday parties, and district wish list items requires fundraising. We recently made a $3000 donation towards technology.
How can you help?
All of this activity is overseen by volunteer executive board members and depends on many dedicated parent volunteers and generous members of our community. Any time that you can give to any of our committees really makes a difference!
Thank you so much for your support and we look forward to connecting with you soon!
